INDIA: LFW:Contrasting fashion statement by Nandita Thirani and Preeti Kapoor

Inspired by the drama and music of the Puccini opera, La Tosca, Nandita Thirani’s creativity moved into a Victorian era as she dreamt up a line of beautiful creations, titled “La Tosca Du Mumbai”.

Bringing the fashion traits of Mumbai and combining them with the costumes of the opera’s Victorian silhouettes, Nandita presented a mélange of gorgeous creations at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2011.

Double georgettes, velvets, chiffons, lamé, satins and georgettes in luxurious colours of crimson, cobalt blue, ivory and black were embellished with a striking vine, leaf and floral designs in Badla, anchor and bullion work.

Shading was used cleverly for velvet dresses on the neckline while embroidered black skirts were teamed with sheer shirts. The black panelled net long maxi skirt over short mini, the loose pajama with the Kalidar kurta and the two toned asymmetric maxi, fitted into the inspiration for the designer. The kimono style shaded tasseled shoulders interest for a kurta was a perfect touch from Nandita.

Lean georgette tubes in black and blue had the antique gold circular embroidery which was seen on many of garments in the collection. The blend of East and West was achieved very subtly by Nandita who added a red embroidered sari with a printed ruffled border, sprinkled a few sheer backs for kurtas and blouses and finally ended the show with Zoa Morani the rising star of Bollywood and the hit film “Always Kabhi Kabhi” wearing a gorgeous glittering lehenga and choli with a stunning dupatta.

Nandita described the line as a Bridge offering which will move effortlessly from semi-formal to ultra-evening glamour.

Preeti S Kapoor dreamt up a delightful fashion story for Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2011. It was a tale seeped in the beauty of the 19th century era which revealed the travels of a woman who moved from the stylish city of Kolkata to the vibrant swinging life of France.

Going completely Indian for her choice of silhouettes, Preeti preferred lehengas, shararas, saris and anarkalis to give a dramatic touch to the creations. With so much ethnic glamour on the ramp Preeti worked with traditional ornamentation to highlight the beautiful lavish fabrics. Resham, gold, Zari and precious stones were turned into beautiful motifs which dazzled under the ramp lights.

Her colour story was bold and lavish with maroon, rusty orange, cream gold, red, green, yellow, mustard, blue and pastels all embellished with intricate embroidery like mirror work and crafts of Bengal.

Moving into the grandeur of Rajasthan, Preeti used rich fabrics like brocades, silks, velvets, tulles, silks and nets which were turned into saris with traditional borders and pallavs, glamorous swirling panels for long full skirts and cholis.

The final segment was Paris with pretty ensembles using French lace and satin trims in shades of cream and ivory for a glittering bridal collection. Crystals and Zari for yokes, sleeves, sexy cholis and lean sherwanis were accompanied by bunches of multi coloured flowers which were splashed on the garments and saris in an elegant manner; while the twinkling waist belts around the saris were a great addition.

The show stopper was the very glamorous Lucky Morani star of the hit musical City of Dreams in a magnificent cream net sari with French lace work and floral embroidery.

For women who want a touch of glamour for their bridal wear which has the creative influences of the East and West; then Preeti S Kapoor’s gorgeous bridal collection will give them several options.
