INDIA: Textile park in Howrah

The state will have its first integrated textile park in Howrah within a couple of months. The park, with an investment of Rs110 crore, will have around 150 units.

After being operational the park will produce both yarns as well as readymade garments. Around 100 acres of land has already been earmarked for the project. The Chamber of Textile Trade and Industry has approached the state government for power subsidy for at least five years as is available in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

Permission has also been sought for appointment of contract labourers at the park. The park is supposed to generate direct employment for 10,000 persons. Lack of investment, poor infrastructure, technological backwardness and low volumes of operation have hindered the growth of textile industry here.

The earlier flourishing sector has witnessed a fall in terms of growth and productivity in the past three decades. At present only 21 textile units are operational in the state, while in 1980sthe number of units were 42.

Again, around 10 to 15 per cent of the present units are not totally operational. The units need to produce thrice of what is produced now to meet the demand and also contribute to the export market, said Mr Bulaki Das Mimani, Secretary, Chamber of Textile Trade and Industry.

The state is unable to meet the state’s demand for cloth as a result of which Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh supply cloth to West Bengal. The chamber will hold a three-day textile fair, TexVision2008, at Netaji Indoor Stadium. State sports minister, Mr Subhas Chakraborty and state micro and small-scale enterprises, textiles and tourism minister, Mr Manabendra Mukherjee will inaugurate the fair on 7 May.

More than 62 textile mills and dealers from all over India and overseas will showcase their products at the fair.
