While the ordinance upgrading Tirupur Municipality into a Corporation has elated the citizens it has also revived their hopes for a better infrastructure.
Though now only 27 sq km of the town will come under the jurisdiction of the Corporation, peripheries, including Nallur and Velampalayam municipalities and eight village panchayats covering 119 sq kms, will be incorporated into the Corporation in the next local body elections. Non-inclusion of the peripheral areas in the Corporation has caused disappointment to many.
The “export” city is expecting to get more Central assistance under schemes like Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Retrieval Mission, Tirupur MLA C. Govindasamy requested the Government to set up a police commissionerate here.
Mr. Govindasamy also wanted creation of Tirupur district. Municipal Chairman K. Selvaraj, who is slated to be the first Mayor, said the city would improve with better planning and administration.
