MALI: Cotton Deliveries Reach 418,000 Tons

Cotton deliveries in Mali had reached 418,000 tons by March 18, or 71 percent of the expected crop of 592,648 tons, figures from state-run cotton company Commodity showed this week.

The figures showed 415,000 tons of the total had been ginned, producing 175,000 tons of cotton fibre.

The season usually closes at the end of April but marketing has been extended to the end of May or June because of delays in transporting a bumper crop to cotton plants.

Usually 85-90 percent of the crop in sub-Saharan Africa's top producer has been delivered by this stage of the season.

Last year's output has been estimated at 240,000 tons, with production hit by a producer boycott because of low prices.
