Aparna & Norden Wangdi
Their Freefalling Design Studio emphasises the cut of the garment giving importance to fit, finish and quality. Aparna and Norden Wangdi contemporise techniques rooted in Indian craftsmanship to present a graphic sense of style. The detailing is in the contrast threadwork, accentuated seam lines and textural embellishments like ruching, printing, dyeing, painting and layering. The result can be described as strikingly individual.
Aparna and Norden Wangdi displayed their ‘The Free Falling’ spring/summer 2007 collection at WIFW show. It was a fusion of the modern and the tradition with tops, dresses, and skirts that dipped into the 18th century for some colourful inspiration. It has appeared in embroidered form on skirts and tops and on solid- coloured dresses. This husband and wife-designing duo detailed large smocked cuffs and clever use of drawstrings on long shifts and hems, patchwork for skirts and then moving right down to the funky soft slippers or futuristic footwear in white was fantastic. The line of tiered skirts and dresses and kimono shirts swirled around the models. The duo created an innovative garment shape by using darts and seams. Formal wear had a delightful black chiffon tube over white, a pin tuck shaded green sheer baby doll maxi, white cotton corset dress, a dramatic red piped paneled asymmetric kimono and a rustic orange/yellow/brown horizontal panel maxi smock. The final shocking pink-orange quilted swirl skirt gave the stamp of unconventional styling, which was vibrant, colourful and comfortably contemporary.View the Aparna & Norden Wangdi Collection |
