There is never anything understated about "Shantanu & Nikhil". The Indian brand, founded by the brother dI,Jo of Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra in 1999, is all about grandiose sexiness and decadent East-meets-West style glamour that vehemently rejects fads and gimmicks, concentrating instead on silhouettes reflecting relaxed sophistication and subdued elegance. Known primarily to play their fashion with contemporary styling, Shantanu Mehra and Nikhil Mehra dove into fashion, first with their Indian menswear couture line in 1999, hence the birth of "Shantanu & Nikhil". Signature women's collections, both pret-a-porter and diffusion soon followed, and the designer duo stepped onto the field of high fashion with their debut diffusion line at the India Fashion Week in 2001. Shantanu, who pursued MBA in finance from Ohio State University, USA, while Nikhil, a trained Fashion Designer from FIDM, Los Angeles decided to pool in their entrepreneurial and creative skills in the business of fashion. The brand's foray in 2003 to reach out to the masses with the comfortable street-smart line is the combination of a fine commercial sensibility and a genuine feel for fashion.
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
Shantanu & Nikhil's design aesthetic is anything but coy: they are masters of elegance and sophistication. The designers focus on tastefully body conscious silhouettes through simple yet sophisticated designs, such as the luxurious jersey rouged tops and dresses, has made them a favorite throughout the country. Shantanu & Nikhil's way with the sporty jackets and shirts for Indian cricketers and tennis players has become emblematic of their love of chic sportswear dressing.
The spirit of their work is the client in mind. The fabrics tend to be both delicate and rich -chiffon silks, silk crepes, silk georgettes, Indian hand woven jaquards and brocades along with leather, wool and suede. Squeezing as much excess as is humanly possible into each show stopping garment -whether a jacket, dress, or top -through external structural engineering in the form of surface ornamentation and texturing is their complete reading of current femininty.
