Individualism is The Key
Individualism is the key word to describe consumer needs this season. Consumers are becoming more knowledgeable than ever before, and they know what they want. In addition, life is becoming less structured. Corporate business is not as rigid as it once was and more people are working out of a home environment. Therefore, the consumer needs a wardrobe that is meaningful, casual and comfortable. The key look will be one of originality, coupled with comfort and ease.

From a production perspective, it's time to reflect this individualism by creating color combinations, fabrics, and garments with endless possibilities. The color palette changes from traditional to tonalities in order to fit the various moods and needs of individuals and very diversified markets. To be successful, it is necessary to create a "recognizable image" through color, fabrication, quality, silhouette, or service.

The millennium will bring in a variety of looks in fabrics ranging from the traditional, the luxurious, the rustic, mixtures of textures and compositions, and the techno nuances achieved through fiber modification, yarns, and finishing techniques. Individualism and newness will also come as the consumer builds his/her wardrobe from these components in order to suit a specific lifestyle.

Importance of Blends
There will be a broad range of blends generating importance. These blends will address the consumers' desires for luxury, femininity, softness, warmth, protection, and freedom of movement. Natural fibers such as cashmere, pashmina, angora, mohair, alpaca, wool, linen, hemp, silk, and cotton will be blended with a variety of manufactured fibers, including acrylic, rayon, polyester, nylon, Lycra, metallics, glass, and steel.

Finishes Add Newness
Various fabric finishes will also add to the newness in fabrics. These will include such treatments as silicon, polyurethane, resins, lacquered, and peach-skin effects. In addition, a variety of printing techniques and heat and foam treatments will be abundant. There will be a continuation of thick-and-thin yarns, multi-ply yarns, slubs, nubs, loops, boucles, tweeds, multi-colored yarns, melange yarns, and space-dyed yarns.

Fabrics are Light & Comfortable
Overall, fabrics should be light and comfortable. The performance characteristics should be felt, but not seen. Fabrics should be made crease resistant through blending, fabric construction, or fabric treatment. The important fabrics will be soft, voluminous, compact or felted, brushed, airy, double faced, textured or sculptured, crushed or crinkled. There will be patchwork effects, embroidery, beading, sequins, quilting, dip-dyed effects, and hand-painted effects. Fabrics will also be constructed with combinations of metallic yarns like bronze, silver, or gold, and plastic yarns with natural fibers for crinkled, pleated, translucent, or soft fluid looks.

THE COLORS: The color palette is divided into six spectrums. The various families of color take on a broad range of hues to cover the entire range for maximum impact. In general, the color palette could be described as soft, gentle, warm, rich, calming, and harmonious.
